$30 BILLION CUT: BIGGEST EVER CUT TO OUR SCHOOLS

16 May 2014

All Australian schools will hurt as a result of Tony Abbott's massive $30 billion cut to education.

When voters went to the polls, they were told that Tony Abbott would not cut education. Instead teachers, parents and students were betrayed with the biggest cut to school funding this country has ever seen.

Before the election, Tony Abbott promised:

"No cuts to health, no cuts to education."

State Premiers are understandably furious and utterly shocked at this unprecedented cut because they know the very real impacts of this cut will be felt in every classroom across the country.

Before the election, Tony Abbott promised:

"We will make sure that no school is worse off."

"This is the biggest cut to education we've seen in our nation's history," Shadow Minister for Education Kate Ellis said.

"This cut will absolutely devastate our schools."

"Teachers will be cut, literacy and numeracy programs will be cut and schools will even close."

In addition, this cut will mean: less disability support, subject choices drastically limited, school support officers and teacher's assistants cut, sport and music programs cut, remedial support cut and class size increases.

"Anybody who values quality education, or indeed the future prosperity of this state and nation, has been sent a message by Tony Abbott that he simply doesn't care," Kate Ellis said.

"Labor will continue to do what it has always done - and that is fight for a fairer education system for all Australians - and the restoration of the Gonski reforms."
