ANAO: GOVERNMENT KNEW ABOUT VET FEE-HELP ISSUES IN 2014

Today’s ANAO report on VET FEE-HELP again confirms the Government knew about issues with the scheme back in 2014 and that its cost blew out under the Government’s watch.

While the Liberals were busy changing the responsible minister, VET FEE-HELP spiralled from around $700 million in 2013 to almost $3 billion in 2015.

“It’s clear the Government knew about serious problems back in 2014, but they chose to sit on their hands,” Shadow Minister for TAFE and Vocational Education Kate Ellis said.

“Instead of focusing on students, the Liberals changed minister five times and completely dropped the ball.

“Despite having more than two years to get it right, Malcom Turnbull was caught-out rushing major changes through the Parliament just weeks before they are due to start.

“The ANAO identified serious implementation issues with VET loans in the past and I’m worried the Government’s unnecessarily rushed implementation of changes risk repeating history instead of learning from it.”
