CHILD CARE COSTS ROCKET UNDER TONY ABBOTT

New Australian Bureau of Statistics figures show child care costs are rising fast under Tony Abbott, despite his promise to make child care more affordable.

Families are feeling the impact of the Government’s $1 billion cuts to child care – with fees across Australia up by an average of 8.5 per cent over the last year.

The price rises are highest in Sydney and Melbourne, where the cost of child care has risen by 8.9 per cent and 8.8 per cent respectively.

This comes on top of the Government’s own figures showing fees are set to rise by 22.5 per cent between the announcement of their child care changes and the Government’s planned start date in mid 2017.

“Families are paying the price for Tony Abbott’s billion dollar child care cuts,” Shadow Early Childhood Minister, Kate Ellis said.

“Despite all the Abbott Government’s promises, families are just getting squeezed tighter and tighter by the cost of living.

“Families need relief now, not in two years time when their children will have moved on to kindergarten and school.”
