EDUCATION TO COST FAMILIES $7.4 BILLION A YEAR MORE UNDER THE LIBERALS’ 15% GST

The independent Parliamentary Budget Office has confirmed the Turnbull Liberal Government’s plan to put a 15% GST on everything will cost Australian families an extra $7.4 billion in school fees and other education expenses in the first year alone.

Over the next ten years, Australian families will be paying $94 billion more for education with a 15% GST on everything.

This comes on top of the Liberal Government’s $30 billion cut to schools – the same as sacking one in seven teachers.

“Labor opposes Malcolm Turnbull’s plan for a 15% GST and extending it to education,” Shadow Education Minister, Kate Ellis, said.

“Increasing the GST and putting it on education will drive up the cost of living for every single family.

“Books will cost more, uniforms will cost more and school fees will go up. No part of education will be exempt – excursions, camps, buses, sport and music will all cost more.

“Education is the smartest investment we can make in our future. Government should be making it more affordable, not putting a GST on it.

“Education is an essential service and must not be subject to Malcolm Turnbull’s 15% GST.

“Parents should have confidence that their child will get a great education, not be forced to worry about how they can afford the basics.

“That’s why Labor won’t support Mr Turnbull’s plan for a 15% GST on education.”
