LIBERAL’S GST ON CHILD CARE TO COST FAMILIES $32 BILLION

The independent Parliamentary Budget Office has confirmed the Turnbull Liberal Government’s plan to put a 15% GST on child care will cost Australian families an extra $2.4 billion in the first year.

Over the next ten years, Australian families will be paying $32 billion more for child care with a 15 per cent GST.

This is in addition to making one in four families worse off under their child care changes.

“Labor not only opposes a 15 per cent GST, we oppose extending the GST to child care at all,”  Shadow Minister for Early Childhood, Kate Ellis, said.

“Increasing the GST and putting it on child care will drive up the cost of living for Australian families who are already struggling to keep their heads above water.”

“A GST on child care will just make it harder for parents to go back to work and force children out of early education.

“Affordable, accessible child care is one of the best ways to boost workforce participation and grow our economy.

“Governments should be doing everything they can to make child care affordable but the Liberal’s 15 per cent GST will just make it more expensive.

“Access to early education amplifies children’s development – but the Liberal’s GST will put it out of reach for many families.”

The Liberals want to bring in a 15 per cent GST and drive up the cost of everything. Labor won’t.
