With Malcolm Turnbull’s rushed changes to VET student loans starting today, the Government is on notice not to bungle their implementation.
Despite being told in 2014 about serious problems with VET student loans, the Liberals didn’t act until the very last sitting day of 2016. Giving TAFEs and the VET sector just weeks to prepare.
“Instead of working with the VET sector over the last four years the Liberals have changed Minister five times,” Shadow Minister for TAFE and Vocational Education, Kate Ellis, said.
“There is a real risk the Government will bungle the implementation of these changes too – leaving students in the lurch through no fault of their own.
“Unless TAFE and VET providers are properly consulted, quality courses will be cut, teachers will lose their jobs and employers will be left without the skills they need.
“It should be Malcolm Turnbull’s New Year’s resolution to finally make TAFE and VET his priority, but if history is anything to go by, it won’t be on his radar at all.”
