2012 | 2011 | 2010 | 2009 | 200809 Oct 2009 - Coates elected to International Olympic Committee Board
The Minister for Sport Kate Ellis has today congratulated John Coates on his election to the Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee.
"Mr Coates has been elevated to one of the most powerful positions in world sport."
"His selection reflects his tireless dedication to sport and the Olympic movement, as well as his position as a highly-respected world leader in sports administration," Ms Ellis said.
"It is magnificent to have an Australian join this influential world sporting body and is a testament to the leading role Australians are playing in the global sports scene."
John Coates has led the Australian Olympic Committee since 1991 and has been a member of the IOC since 2001. He has served on key IOC sub-committees in that time.
He was awarded the Olympic Order in 2000 for his work on the Sydney Games and in 2006 he was made a Companion of the Order of Australia for his services to the Olympic movement.
Among his litany of past sports leadership positions, Mr Coates was formerly the Deputy Chairman of the Australian Institute of Sport and Sports Commission.
Mr Coates joins the 15-member Executive Board immediately, along with Scotsman Sir Craig Reedie who takes up the second available position.
Mr Coates follows in the footsteps of Australia's only other IOC Executive Board Member Kevan Gosper, who served on the Board for 17 years.
"I am confident that John Coates will do a fine job and we congratulate him on this important new step. He's doing Australia proud," Ms Ellis said.
