THE HON KATE ELLIS MP
MEMBER FOR ADELAIDE
MEDIA RELEASE
Friday 20 November 2009
Safer streets for Prospect pedestrians
Pedestrians at Prospect will be safer with the operation of a new federally-funded
pedestrian-activated crossing on Churchill Road.
"Local residents talked to me about their fears that the road posed serious safety risks
for pedestrians and I have acted on those concerns," Ms Ellis said.
"At the last election, I pledged to deliver a pedestrian crossing at Churchill Road,
between Gladstone Road and Boyle Street."
"Earlier this year I met that promise with the Federal Government granting $200, 000
through AusLink to the City of Prospect to construct the pedestrian crossing."
"Three pedestrian refuges have also been constructed along Churchill Road between
Regency and Torrens Roads," Ms Ellis said.
Churchill Road is part of Adelaide's arterial road system and carries about 28, 000
vehicles a day, including B-double trucks.
"So far this year eight pedestrians have died on South Australia's roads and that's
eight too many. There have been countless other near misses," Ms Ellis said.
"This is one more way the Federal Government is curbing risks to pedestrians and
making our roads safer for all South Australians."
The Churchill Road precinct includes business and residential premises, several
schools, youth facilities including a recently renovated skate park at George Wittle
Reserve, Charles Cane Reserve and many elderly residents who rely on safe and
convenient crossing points.
"I thank the City of Prospect for its support and action to secure this important
community safety initiative."
