A double-sided grandstand connecting the southern end of CUA Stadium and Howell Cricket Oval will be the centrepiece of a number of upgrades to local sporting facilities in Penrith.

The Minister for Sport, Kate Ellis joined the Member for Lindsay, David Bradbury today to announce almost $5.5 million in grants from the Rudd Government to upgrade local sporting grounds and facilities in the Penrith region.

"Residents of Penrith take great pride and interest in sports of various codes, and these upgrades will be a boon for local sports players, spectators and families alike," she said.

The grants include:

  • $5 million for Penrith Stadium project, connecting the main football stadium and cricket oval;
  • $250,000 for upgrades to the Penrith Valley Regional Sports Centre;
  • $100,000 for construction of spectator seating at the Cook Park Soccer Grounds;
  • $84,000 for resurfacing work at the Jamison Park Netball Courts; and
  • $50,000 for upgrades to facilities for Penrith Waratahs Rugby League Club.

Ms Ellis said the allocation of $5 million towards the construction of the double-sided grandstand, connecting CUA Stadium and Howell Oval, delivered in full on the election commitment made to the people of Penrith last year.

CUA Stadium is home to the mighty Penrith Panthers, while Howell Oval is home to Penriths first grade cricket team.

Mr Bradbury said the plan to connect both sporting venues was visionary and, when complete, would make the facility a first class sports and recreation precinct for the whole region.

"Penrith has produced many great sporting champions over the years, many of whom started out playing on these same grounds," Mr Bradbury said.

"The Rudd Government places great importance on supporting the development of high quality sports and recreational facilities."
