05 Feb 2010 - End of an era at Adelaide Oval

THE HON KATE ELLIS MP
MINISTER FOR SPORT
MEDIA RELEASE
5 February 2010
End of an era at Adelaide Oval
Minister for Sport Kate Ellis today congratulated one of the world's premier cricket
ground curators, Les Burdett, on his retirement as ground manager at Adelaide Oval.
"It's sad to see Les go after four decades at the helm of this magnificent ground.
"The beautiful Adelaide Oval is the cricketing pride of South Australia and Australia. I
don't think many other grounds meet the standard of this picturesque venue.
"There aren't too many cricketing venues in the world that are held in the same esteem
as Adelaide Oval and Les' legacy will live on in this amazing venue."
Mr Burdett has seen huge changes in cricket and the Adelaide Oval in his 40 years
working at the iconic sporting venue, including overseeing construction of the Sir
Donald Bradman stand in 1989, the Chappell and Clem Hill stands in 2003 and the
2007 reconstruction of the playing field.
Mr Burdett has also played a leading role in the management of other sporting facilities
across Australia and the world including India, South Africa and Kuala Lumpur.
In South Australia, Mr Burdett's skill has also been applied to the Santos Athletic
Stadium and South Australia's suburban and rural sporting grounds.
"Les Burdett has said that his family is his first love, followed by Adelaide Oval. His
dedication to his work is evident in the marvellous gift he leaves to sport in South
Australia and Australia," Ms Ellis said.
"Les will be missed, but I'm glad he will continue to play a role in the management of
Adelaide Oval as a consultant."
"I wish Les all the best and thank him for his passionate devotion to our great sporting
facilities over the past 40 years."
