Ministers take next steps on The Future of Sport in Australia
The Minister for Sport Kate Ellis welcomes decisions made at today's Ministerial Council for Sport and Recreation meeting in Melbourne.
Commonwealth, State and Territory Ministers received a presentation from the Chairman of the Independent Sport Panel Chairman David Crawford on its recent report The Future of Sport in Australia.
"I'm pleased that Ministers have agreed that it's crucial to the success of our sporting system that we take a holistic and strategic approach to sport at both community and elite levels," Ms Ellis said.
"Ministers also set up a working party to respond to the structural recommendations in the report, including the reorganisation of the AIS and State and Territory sports institutes and the proposed National Policy Framework.
"The action of State and Territory Governments is pivotal to the reform and long term success of sport in Australia. I want to work in partnership with my State and Territory colleagues to make our sporting system the best it can be," Ms Ellis said.
This week will see community and sporting organisations have their say on the Independent Sport Panel's report at forums in Canberra and Melbourne organised by the Australian Sports Commission.
Ms Ellis will also meet with AOC President John Coates later this week.
"I look forward to working with organisations across the Australian sporting spectrum as we start work on build a brighter future for sport in this country."
The Government will formally respond to the recommendations of the Independent Sport Panel in the new year.
