New dedicated taskforce to support Australia's World Cup Bid
The Minister for Sport Kate Ellis today announced that a dedicated taskforce will be established to help support the development of Australia's bid for the FIFA World Cup in 2018 or 2022.
"Australia's bid is progressing well with the Football Federation Australia clearing the first task of submitting a Bidding Agreement earlier this month," Ms Ellis said.
This was achieved with the assistance of the National Coordinators Geoff Dixon and Ron Harvey.
The pair, appointed by the Minister in November, have supported the FFA by working across Federal, State and Territory Governments to maximise the Bid's success.
All parties are now working hard to submit Australia's Bid Book in May next year.
"This is our chance to shine and convince FIFA that Australia is the best place to stage the biggest sporting event on earth.
"Australia can deliver an amazing experience to international athletes, the millions of football fans across the globe and the World Game itself," Ms Ellis said.
"We're in it to win and the Federal Government is working to assist the FFA in putting the best bid together with the states and territories and other key stakeholders."
As the proponent for Australia's bid, the FFA is responsible for working with all governments and major sporting codes to put together the best bid possible.
To help achieve this, a Commonwealth Government taskforce will be established in the Department of Health and Ageing to drive high level engagement within
and between Commonwealth agencies, State and Territory Governments, the FFA and other sports.
The Taskforce will work with the National Coordinators and support the FFA to achieve:
"
the necessary government guarantees and indemnities
"
the broad parameters for government involvement in, and support for, the provision of venues and other infrastructure requirements and;
"
assist the FFA to resolve the displacement of other sporting codes and other stakeholder concerns.
"One of the strengths of Australia is the diversity of sports on offer. It's critical that other sports are consulted as we finalise the bid.
"The taskforce will assist the FFA to work with all sports to ensure that an Australian World Cup can deliver maximum benefit to sport and the community," Ms Ellis said.
The Australian Government has delivered $45.6 million to the FFA to support Australia's bid.
FIFA will announce the successful host countries in December 2010.
