$8.6 million leaves legacy for sailing, Perth and emerging nations
The Minister for Sport Kate Ellis has announced $8.6 million in Federal funds to support the Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships.
"This investment will pay for Olympic-class boats, race management equipment and rigid hull inflatable boats as well as training for volunteers and officials," Ms Ellis said.
"This funding will deliver lasting benefits to sailing in this nation, with the equipment being used across Australia after the event, in co-operation with Sailing Australia.
"Our contribution will also go toward the event's Emerging Nations Program, which provides the chance for young sailors from less advanced sailing nations to build their skills and compete in international sailing competitions."
The funding will also help promote the Sailing World Championships and enable live television coverage increasing the global profile of the sport and Australia.
The $8.6 million investment is part of the National Partnership Agreement on Health Services, which was agreed at Monday's COAG meeting in Brisbane.
"We're leaving a valuable legacy for sailing in Western Australia, the nation and the international sporting scene in terms of resources and ongoing health and economic benefits," Ms Ellis said.
"We're strong supporters of sport and we're determined to lift participation by Australians in activities that promote lifelong physical and mental health," Ms Ellis said.
"The Sailing World Championships provide an ideal way to encourage Australians to get active and reinforce Australia's reputation as a host of international sporting events."
The Championships will be held in waters off Fremantle from 3 - 18 December 2011 and will attract 1400 competitors from around the world, more than 4000 officials and thousands of visitors to Western Australia.
Event organisers expect millions of viewers worldwide to follow coverage of the 2011 championships on television and the Internet.
The Western Australian Government has committed $8.88 million to the championships.
The ISAF Sailing World Championships are held every four years and the Perth event will be the main qualifier for the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
When awarding the championships to Perth, the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) cited the State's quality sailing infrastructure and positive sailing conditions. It also commended the strong support Perth's bid has from both the Australian and WA Governments.
