Minister puts Australia's best foot forward in South Africa
The Minister for Sport, Kate Ellis, is in South Africa today to promote Australia's bid to win the 2018 or 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Over three days in Cape Town, the Minister will attend high level meetings and events to plan and promote Australia's bid and attend the 2010 World Cup Draw.
"We're in it to win it. We're making sure we're a part of the World Cup action and putting our best foot forward to secure the FIFA World Cup for Australia," Ms Ellis said.
"As the Football Federation Australia finalises Australia's Bidding Agreement, we're getting on with the job of pitching what Australia has to offer the world football community," Ms Ellis said.
The Minister will meet with the South African Deputy Sports Minister Gert Oosthuizen, Russian Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko, FIFA President Joseph Blatter, Football Federation Australia Chairman Frank Lowy and CEO Ben Buckley as well as other international officials during her visit.
"I'll also be at tomorrow's FIFA Media Expo to push Australia's strong case to host the 2018 and 2022 World Cup to the international community."
"And I'll be there to see which teams the Socceroos will face at the 2010 World Cup at the official draw tomorrow evening," Ms Ellis said.
The Australian Government is supporting the 1 Goal - Education for All campaign as part of the 2010 World Cup. The Prime Minister joined world leaders to launch the campaign earlier this year, while on the same day Minister Ellis launched the campaign in Australia.
"1 Goal is a global campaign to give children living in poverty the chance to go to school and I'm lending my support to this great initiative while I'm in South Africa," Ms Ellis said.
Ms Ellis will donate 1700 lapdesks (light-weight, portable writing surfaces) to primary school children at Cape Town today, as part of the Australian Government's contribution to 1Goal.
The Minister will also officially open Australia's new Honorary Consul Office in Cape Town today.
