Bright lights up the Winter Olympics
Minister for Sport Kate Ellis today congratulated Torah Bright on today living her dream of taking Olympic gold at the Vancouver Winter Olympics.
"Torah is an amazing young sports woman who has worked hard to back up her fifth place at the Torino Winter Games with a gold today," Ms Ellis said.
"Congratulations also to AIS and NSW Institute of Sport athlete Holly Crawford, who took eighth place. I look forward to seeing more of her in coming years."
At 23 years of age, Torah is already a superstar of snowboarding. Torah has scaled many of the peaks of her sporting profession since exploding onto the scene in 2003 for her first World Cup season.
Since then she has achieved a record to rival that of American snowboard champion Shaun White known as 'the flying tomato'.
Torah is a three time World Superpipe Champion (2006, 2007 and 2008), three time Nippon Open winner (2005, 2007 and 2008), the overall winner of the 2007 Burton Global Open Series and winner of the 2007 TTR Women's World Tour.
Last year, Torah won her second Winter X-Games title and her third US Open title. She also took home a World Cup title in Switzerland.
"Torah's second run today wowed the crowds and had all of her fans back here in Australia sitting on the edge of our seats," Ms Ellis said.
"Congratulations should also go to all those who work at the Australian Institute of Sport and the NSW Institute of Sport, for their support to these fine young athletes."
