Looking back helps light the path forward in child care
A new book launched today by the Minister for Early Childhood Education and Child Care Kate Ellis shines a spotlight on the importance of high quality early learning and care.
Making a difference for children: The Australian journey in assuring quality child care is published by the National Childcare Accreditation Council (NCAC) and examines the development of early childhood services in Australia over a century.
NCAC is the nation's peak child care accreditation body and provides advice, support and resources to child care professionals.
"Making a difference for children is a century's worth of information on the development of early childhood education and child care services in Australia, making it a treasure trove.
"This retrospective demonstrates the importance of constantly pushing to lift the quality of early learning and care for young children and their families across Australia," Ms Ellis said.
Our early childhood education and care system has come a long wayfrom the early twentieth century crches to a system caring for and educating more than a million children each year.
"The report tracks the development of the accreditation landscape since its early days and supports the case for the Rudd Government's historic national quality reforms."
"This book gives us the opportunity to delve deep into the past and see where lessons can be learnt, so we can work together to improve the future for all Australian children," Ms Ellis said.
Research shows that a quality early childhood education can help overcome disadvantage and set young children on the road to a happy and healthy future.
"We want all services to give a bright start to all Australian children, no matter where a child lives or what their background," Ms Ellis said.
The Rudd Government has made early childhood education and care a priority by investing more than $16 billion over the next four years.
