Australian Youth Forum in Launceston discusses youth violence
The Minister for Youth Kate Ellis will today attend the Australian Youth Forum Outreach at Launceston and discuss the important issue of violence with local young people.
The Rudd Government's Australian Youth Forum holds outreach forums to engage with young people outside city areas about issues of local concern.
"I'm keen to discuss the issue of violence with young Tasmanians ahead of hearings of the House of Representatives Inquiry into the Impact of Violence on Young Australians in Tasmania next month," Ms Ellis said.
"Young people raise all sorts of issues with me as the Minister for Youth including body image, education and employment," she said.
"Increasingly young people are raising the issue of violence being perpetrated against them, or the fear of becoming a victim of violence, and that's a real worry to me.
"That's why I requested that the House of Representatives investigate this issue and I'm looking forward to seeing what suggestions the committee comes up with."
The House Standing Committee on Family, Community, Housing and Youth is now conducting public hearing on the mainland and next month it will visit Tasmania to take evidence.
The Rudd Government's Australian Youth Forum outreach events have so far been held in Launceston and Devonport in Tasmania, Bankstown in New South Wales and Sale in Victoria.
"Outreach forums and meetings give young people living in regional areas an opportunity to get together in their own community to discuss important national and local issues," Ms Ellis said.
"We're listening and we're acting on the issues young people in the city and the country are concerned about. Today is another way we're doing that."
The outcomes of the Launceston and other AYF Outreach events will be reported at the Australian Youth Forum website www.youth.gov.au/ayf.
