SOUTH AUSTRALIA LEADS CYCLE TOURISM PUSH
The Minister for Tourism, Martin Ferguson AM MP, has welcomed the launch of a new project based in South Australia to attract more cycle tourists to regional Australia.
Bicycle SA received $201,050 from the Australian Tourism Development Program to design a Cycle Tourism Resource Kit able to help regional communities invest in cycle tourism. The kit enables groups to deploy new branding and marketing strategies and distribute useful data. These resources are being used in regional areas in Western Australia, Victoria, Queensland, Tasmania as well as the Southern Flinders Ranges in South Australia.
Launching the Cycle Tourism Resource Kit in Adelaide, Senator Anne McEwen, representing Minister Ferguson said: "Cycle tourism presents a great opportunity for regional communities, for local businesses and for cycling enthusiasts. Better marketing and on-line resources encourage investment in new, high-quality cycle tourism products and gives cycling an opportunity to make an even greater contribution to the tourism industry and to Australia's economic growth."
Minister Ferguson said funding for projects such as Bicycle SA's Cycle Tourism Resource Kit complements a wider strategy to help the Australian tourism industry make an even greater contribution to economic growth.
"The National Long-Term Tourism Strategy I recently launched aims to unlock more investment in tourism a $40 billion industry in Australia," he said.
"The Strategy seeks to remove barriers to investment in hotels, airports, conference centres and other important tourism infrastructure and also lays the groundwork for better research so that tourism operators and investors have the right information at their fingertips. Better information on demographics, taxation, market trends, labour issues and the impact of climate change gives investors more confidence."
Tourism is an important industry in South Australia employing more than 28,000 people and contributing more than $2.3 billion in Gross State Product.
Ten innovative tourism projects in South Australia are receiving a total of $711,360 funding under the Australian Government's TQUAL Grants program announced in December, which replaces the Australian Tourism Development Program.
