Rudd Government delivers infrastructure legacy for Adelaide
The Member for Adelaide Kate Ellis today joined the Manningham community to celebrate the opening of the upgraded Bennett Avenue Reserve.
The City of Port Adelaide Enfield project was made possible by a $120,000 grant from the Rudd Government's Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program.
"The Bennett Avenue Reserve upgrade is one of thousands of projects across Australia that are supporting local jobs and keeping local people employed in tough economic times," Ms Ellis said.
The more than $1 billion program is the largest single investment in local infrastructure in the nation's history and is a key plank of the Rudd Government's Economic Stimulus Plan.
"During construction of the Bennett Avenue Reserve upgrade 15 jobs were supported, providing a boost to the local economy and security for local families," Ms Ellis said.
"Works included an upgrade of the play space area and the installation of a barbeque and seating to encourage greater use of the reserve by the local community.
"The upgrade of the reserve also honours the legacy of Dr A.H. Bennett. Dr Bennett’s home was the meeting place of the Enfield Rotary Club, which was established in 1968. Dr Bennett later donated his land and it now forms part of the reserve."
"As well as showing respect and appreciation for Dr Bennett's legacy, this investment leaves the community with the legacy of long lasting community infrastructure."
The Rudd Government is also providing a further $275,000 under Round Two of the program to:
Upgrade the E. P. Nazer Reserve at Semaphore with new play areas, barbeque and sheltered areas
Upgrade Linear Park in Windsor Gardens to create another recreational precinct along the River Torrens
Upgrade Yandra Reserve with fencing around the basketball court, barbeque and sheltered areas.
"These projects weren't determined from Canberra - they were put forward by the local councils as local community priorities. By letting local communities decide, the Rudd Government is helping turn local dreams into reality," Ms Ellis said.
Under the first round, more than 3,300 community construction projects have either been completed or are underway.
