Proud moment for new Socceroos and nation

The Minister for Sport Kate Ellis has today congratulated the 31 players named in the squad for this year's FIFA World Cup Finals in South Africa next month.

"To be a Socceroo is a great honour. Today they become part of Australian sporting history," Ms Ellis said.

"To be a Socceroo is also a great responsibility with the hopes of a nation resting on their shoulders for success at the South Africa 2010 FIFA World Cup," she said.

"In one short month, Australia will be waving the green and gold and cheering on our sporting champions as they take on the world's best.

"For those chosen to represent Australia for the first time, I'm sure this is the realisation of a dream."

"I'm sure, like the 2006 squad, our fresh crop of Socceroos will punch above their weight in South Africa and inspire more youngsters in their sporting endeavours."

The Rudd Government is a strong and proud supporter of football in Australia.

"We're backing Australia's bid to bring the FIFA World Cup to our shores in 2018 or 2022 for the economic, social and sporting benefits that the world's largest sporting event can provide to our nation.

"I look forward to presenting our strong bid to FIFA President Sepp Blatter in Zurich on Friday, with Football Federation Australia's Frank Lowy and Ben Buckley."

"We've supported 14 of the players named in the Socceroos squad today through the Australian Institute of Sport football program," Ms Ellis said.

Since 2006/07 the Government, through the Australian Sports Commission, has invested more than $5.47 million in the AIS men's and women's football programs.

"I wish the Socceroos the best of luck and look forward to seeing their immense talents on display in South Africa next month," Ms Ellis said.
