MINISTER FOR EARLY EDUCATION,
CHILD CARE AND YOUTH
MEDIA RELEASE
3 June 2010
New equipment and training for 12 500 Family Day Care carers
Kate Ellis MP, Minister for Early Childhood Education and Child Care today announced $4.5 million in funding for Australian Family Day Care services.
These one-off grants of $350 will be available to around 12 500 family day care carers across Australia to build their capability to provide high quality care. Carers can use the grant to undertake professional development and training activities or to purchase new play and educational equipment.
"We are committed to supporting the family day care sector to deliver quality care to the 100 000 Australian children who they care for each day," Ms Ellis said.
The Government is pleased to partner with Family Day Care Australia, the peak body for the Family Day Care sector to deliver this grant. Family Day Care Australia is uniquely placed to deliver the payments to carers on the Government's behalf and will distribute payments to carers over the coming months.
This funding will also assist Family Day Care Australia to implement their Five Year Plan, which has a significant focus on developing a highly professional and educated Family Day Care workforce through the provision of training opportunities.
"Family day care provides a unique and natural early learning environment for children," Ms Ellis said.
"The Government is committed to working hand in hand with the sector to help them grow and adapt to the improvements we are making through the National Quality Framework."
The National Quality Framework, agreed in partnership with the state and territory governments, will for the first time set a national quality standard for early childhood education and child care providers across the country.
In real terms this means that all child care providers will be required to deliver better staff-to-child ratios so that each child gets more individual attention, and improve staff qualifications so carers are better equipped to help children learn and develop.
"The Australian Government has an ambitious agenda to improve the quality, affordability and accessibility of early childhood education and child care," Ms Ellis said.
"And we are backing this commitment up with an investment of more than $16 billion over the next four years in early childhood education and child care."
