Supporting workplace advice for vulnerable workers in South Australia
Member for Adelaide, Kate Ellis has welcomed the announcement today that the Rudd Government will assist the Working Women's Centre in South Australia to deliver vital workplace services and advice for South Australia's most vulnerable workers.
"Difficulties at work can put huge pressure on South Australia's working families and the free advice provided by this service helps people with putting food on the table or paying the rent or mortgage," Ms Ellis said.
The Working Women's Centre provides services like a telephone advice service, self-help information sessions for people representing themselves before Fair Work Australia, an evening legal advice service, community legal education and a research service.
"The Working Women's Centre plays a valuable role in providing advice, assistance and information to South Australians who experience difficulties in asserting and exercising their workplace rights," Ms Ellis said.
The SA Working Women's Centre will receive funding from the Federal Government of over $104 000 in each of the 2010-11 and 2011-12 financial years to support this important work and provide certainty for staff and the hundreds of people who use these services.
Australians concerned about their workplace conditions and rights should contact the Fair Work Ombudsman in the first instance. Officers from the Fair Work Ombudsman are experienced in dealing with issues relating to wages, Awards, dismissal and disputes.
Further information is available online at www.fwo.gov.au and advice is available Monday Friday 8am-6pm on 131 394.
