THE HON KATE ELLIS MP
MEMBER FOR ADELAIDE
MEDIA RELEASE
30 June 2010
New facilities at St Gabriel's School
The Member for Adelaide, Kate Ellis, today officially opened the new multipurpose hall and language classroom at St Gabriel's School, built as part of the Australian Government's Building the Education Revolution (BER).
St Gabriel's School in Enfield has received $150 000 under the National School Pride (NSP) and $2.5 million under the Primary Schools for the 21st Century (P21) elements of the BER.
The school's new multipurpose hall has finally replaced transportable buildings with a permanent facility. It has a full size basketball court, purpose-built soundproof stage and a language classroom.
"This new multipurpose hall will be a great resource for students to use, especially given St Gabriel's longstanding commitment to sports and music," Ms Ellis said.
"The new facilities will be available for use by other schools and the general community as well. Already, the school has its first playgroup up and running for children 0 5 years."
The St Gabriel's School Hall is one of the first BER projects completed by South Australian Catholic Schools. Now that the new facility is complete, St Gabriel's teachers and students will have the benefit of 21st century facilities.
The project has also supported the employment of 12 local people during construction.
"Supporting employment was one of the driving principals of the Economic Stimulus Plan and I am delighted that this could be achieved here in Enfield," Ms Ellis said.
"It has been fantastic to see local principals, parents and tradespeople working together to deliver important projects like this one. It is also particularly encouraging to see that this project employed a local builder and architect, and that local products were used wherever possible."
The BER is a key element of the Government's $42 billion Nation Building Economic Stimulus Plan to support jobs, stimulate local economies and invest in important infrastructure for the long term.
Under the BER, the $1.28 billion National School Pride (NSP) element has delivered funding to over 9400 schools and the $14.1 billion Primary Schools for the 21st Century (P21) element has delivered funding to over 7900 eligible primary schools.
