GILLARD GOVERNMENT MAKES CITY LIVING MORE AFFORDABLE FOR HOME BUYERS
Member for Adelaide Kate Ellis today announced that the Gillard Labor Government will invest $2.78 million in the Sturt Street car park redevelopment to make city living more affordable.
Investing in local infrastructure is part of Federal Labor's comprehensive economic plan and will help to build a stronger regional economy.
The funding will be used by the City of Adelaide to complete land remediation, construct an underground car park and upgrade the public realm and community building on the site at Sturt Street.
Ms Ellis said that as a result of the Government's investment, 72 home buyers would save $70,411 when they purchase one of the 168 new homes to be built on the Sturt Street site.
"This is a great outcome for Adelaide home buyers who wouldn't otherwise be able to afford the option of living in the city", Ms Ellis said.
"It shows that the Gillard Labor Government is investing directly in local infrastructure that is needed to unlock housing supply and improve housing affordability for home buyers in Adelaide."
This investment in affordable housing for homebuyers complements other Gillard Labor Government programs that will increase the stock of affordable rental housing by 80,000 homes across Australia.
"Housing affordability has been a major challenge in Adelaide for almost a decade," Ms Ellis said.
"The Gillard Labor Government's investment in projects like the Sturt Street car park redevelopment demonstrates our commitment to helping make the dream of home ownership a reality for more Australians".
The Federal Labor Government established the Housing Affordability Fund in 2008 to reduce planning and infrastructure costs in new housing developments.
In total the Government has offered funding for more than 70 individual projects around Australia worth $460 million under this program.
This funding has already been provided for in the budget.
