FIRST STEP FOR ADELAIDE GP SUPER CLINIC
The Minister for Health and Ageing, Nicola Roxon, and the Member for Adelaide, Kate Ellis, today announced the first steps to developing a GP Super Clinic for Adelaide.
Minister Roxon said the Department of Health and Ageing will consult the local community in seeking their views about the establishment of a GP Super Clinic in the Adelaide electorate over the coming months.
"Local GP Super Clinics are a key element of the Australian Government's strategy to build a stronger primary health care system, and the Adelaide Clinic will bring together health care services and provide the community with new services," Minister Roxon said.
Member for Adelaide, Kate Ellis said that this is the first step in the development of new and improved GP services in Adelaide.
"When I wrote to the local community, I was overwhelmed by the support received in petitioning to bring a GP Super Clinic to Adelaide," Ms Ellis said.
"This was particularly the case for residents in suburbs like Kilburn, Blair Athol, Enfield and Northfield who have struggled to access health services due to the lack of GPs in their local area.
"I am delighted to be part of a Government that is able to deliver this vital investment in community health services here in Adelaide."
GP Super Clinics are a key element of the Australian Government's strategy to build a stronger primary health care system, having already provided over 250,000 services across Australia.
GP Super Clinics bring together general practitioners, practice nurses, visiting medical specialists, allied health professionals and other health care providers to deliver integrated multi-disciplinary, primary health care services aimed at addressing the health care needs and priorities of local communities.
These Clinics also provide an important site for training and education, giving medical, nursing and allied health students and GP registrars an opportunity to learn in a multidisciplinary setting.
Formal public consultations are vital in the process of establishing the GP Super Clinics. All local community members and stakeholders are encouraged to attend consultation meetings. The consultation timeline will be provided in coming weeks.
"The local consultation process in Adelaide will ensure that the local community and stakeholders have the opportunity to shape their new GP Super Clinic and tailor it to meet the needs of the community." Ms Ellis said.
