University of Adelaide opens its doors to earthquake affected students
The University of Adelaide will today welcome more than 200 students whose study has been disrupted by the recent devastating earthquake in Christchurch.

The students, from the University of Canterbury, are due to arrive this afternoon on a charter flight negotiated with Qantas and will begin their studies at the University of Adelaide tomorrow.

"I congratulate the University of Adelaide for putting together this much-needed assistance package for the Canterbury students," Senator Evans said.

"These students have gone through a dramatic ordeal during the Christchurch earthquake, and this warm gesture shows the close and enduring ties between Australia and New Zealand.

"The students will begin their studies tomorrow ensuring they experience minimal disruption to their academic year."

Member for Adelaide, Kate Ellis MP said the students would be warmly welcomed into the local community.

"The students will stay either in homestay or student accommodation and will be made to feel at home by the locals and everyone at the University of Adelaide," Ms Ellis said.

"The University is encouraging staff and graduates to consider taking on a Homestay student to help lower the students' living costs.

"Under this generous program up to 500 students are expected to study at the University of Adelaide and I'm sure they will be warmly welcomed by all."

Senator Evans said the students were first and second year undergraduate students in the fields of Arts, Science, Commerce and Marketing.

"They will not be charged any tuition fees by the University of Adelaide and will be studying under the University of Canterbury's student exchange and study aboard program," he said.

"A total of up to 500 students are expected to accept the offer to study in Australia."

Senator Evans said the Australian people felt for the people of Christchurch and the Government has made a $5 million donation to help with the earthquake recovery effort.
