25 INDIGENOUS AUSTRALIANS JOIN THE FINANCE SECTOR
An innovative employment program is providing Indigenous job seekers in South Australia with careers in banking and finance.
The program is the result of a partnership between ANZ, Westpac, the Commonwealth Bank, National Australia Bank and Bank SA, supported by the Gillard Government's Indigenous Employment Program.
Minister for Indigenous Employment and Economic Development Mark Arbib and Member for Adelaide Kate Ellis today congratulated the 25 participants who graduated from the 10-week program in Adelaide.
"The participants will now move into full-time jobs with the participating banks and continue to receive mentoring for the next two years," Senator Arbib said.
"They have been provided with job-readiness training and mentoring, and cultural awareness training has been provided for their co-workers.
"This program is giving Indigenous Australians jobs in the banking and finance sector and skills that will ensure they are employable across the country."
Ms Ellis said the Gillard Government had provided more than $460,000 in funding for the project through the Indigenous Employment Program, which was run with the support of the Mining, Energy and Engineering Academy.
"The initiative was developed by the banks to increase Indigenous employment and supports their Reconciliation Action Plans and the Gillard Government's Closing the Gap agenda," Ms Ellis said.
"Through collaboration between Government, industry and the training sector we are building and strengthening job opportunities for Indigenous jobseekers in South Australia."
Senator Arbib said Treasury predicted 500,000 jobs would be created over the next two years and it was critical that Indigenous Australians had the support and training they needed to take up employment.
"Indigenous employment is not a short term issue. Over the next four years the Government has also committed almost $650 million to the Indigenous Employment Program," Senator Arbib said.
"This is part of the Gillard Government's target to create more than 100,000 jobs for Indigenous Australians by 2018."
