MINISTER FOR EMPLOYMENT PARTICIPATION

MEDIA RELEASE

Giving the gift of 10 000 jobs this Christmas

Employers of all sizes have banded together to hire more than 10,000 disadvantaged job seekers as a part of the Job Services Australia provider MAX Employment's Great Australian Christmas Jobs Drive campaign.

Minister for Employment Participation Kate Ellis said that the campaign, which began October 1, had already exceeded its target of getting 10 000 unemployed people into work by Christmas Day.

"Despite low levels of unemployment, we know that over the Christmas period there are still some Australians doing it tough. And that is particularly the case for those who are out of work and of course their families," Ms Ellis said.

"The Great Australian Christmas Jobs Drive has truly changed the lives of thousands of unemployed Australians, providing them with the best possible Christmas present - a decent job."

"Every individual and organisation who has worked on this jobs drive has helped to create a better future for those doing it tough, working together to find sustainable job opportunities and motivating job seekers to continue looking for work.

As part of the campaign, MAX Employment is donating $70,000 to the Smith Family Christmas Appeal and will fulfil its promise to donate another $30,000 for reaching its campaign job target.

MAX Employment is one of the country's largest Job Services Australia providers and delivers assistance to job seekers in need, across the country.
Job Services Australia has already proven to be an extremely successful program since it commenced in July 2009, with more than a quarter of the most disadvantaged job seekers now being employed following assistance.
"A job means so much more than collecting a fortnightly pay cheque," Ms Ellis said.

"It gives people dignity, a sense of self, a sense of pride and indeed a sense of social connectedness - as well as providing the opportunity to contribute to Australia's economy."
The Australian Government is investing around $5.5 billion in Jobs Services Australia over the next four years.
