2012 | 2011 | 2010 | 2009 | 200801 Aug 2008 - Rudd Governmetn boosts funding for emergency volunteers in the Adelaide Electorate
Emergency services volunteers in the city centre have received a boost of more than $300,000 in the fourth funding round of the Australian Governments National Emergency Volunteer Support Fund, the Federal Member for Adelaide, Kate Ellis, announced today.
The funding will be used by a number of organisations, including the St John Ambulance Service and the South Australian Country Fire Service.
183 projects across Australia have received grants for projects intended to help volunteer emergency management organisations support their communities following an announcement by the Attorney-General, Robert McClelland.
"This funding is about supporting volunteer organisations at the frontline of emergency management," Kate Ellis said.
"It will assist emergency management response and recovery agencies to support their local communities by providing funding for projects aimed at boosting the recruitment, retention and training of volunteers."
Some 500,000 people in Australia volunteer their services in some emergency management capacity, and 350,000 of those are directly involved in emergency first response, principally through the various rural fire services and the State Emergency Services.
In making the announcement, Mr McClelland said that, in the event of emergencies and disasters occurring in Australia, our volunteers play a crucial role in assisting the community to respond and recover.
This funding is a clear signal of the Rudd Government's commitment to supporting volunteers in this essential work.
