2012 | 2011 | 2010 | 2009 | 200820 Aug 2008 - $300,000 Investment to fix two road Black Spots in Adelaide
The Rudd Labor Government will invest $300,000 to fix two dangerous black spots on local roads, Anthony Albanese, Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, and Member for Adelaide, Kate Ellis, announced today.
Mr Albanese said, "This is part of $50.5 million in funding that the Rudd Government is delivering to fix black spots on local roads across Australia.
"We are committed to reducing crashes on our roads. Accidents take a huge toll on families, our communities and the economy."
Ms Ellis said, "I am pleased that this funding will help make two critical intersections safer for Adelaide motorists and pedestrians. The Government will keep working with the local community to deliver safer roads in and around Adelaide.
"Through the Black Spots program, the Government is helping to drive down the appalling social and economic cost of road carnage."
The two projects in Adelaide are:
- $250,000 to install pedestrian crossing lights on North Terrace, 100 metres east of Frome Street, and
- $50,000 to build a median along Main North Road through the intersection of Main North Road and Lefevre Terrace.
Mr Albanese and Ms Ellis said that the projects were assessed and recommended by a panel of independent road safety experts, including the Royal Automobile Association of South Australia, Motor Accident Commission, South Australia Road Transport Association, and state and local government.
Mr Albanese said the program had a proven track record of saving lives.
"An evaluation of the Black Spot program has shown that it prevented at least 32 fatalities and more than 1,500 serious injuries in its first three years," he said.
"It also returns around $14 for every $1 invested by reducing the number and cost of crashes."
Ms Ellis said the upgrades are part of the Rudd Government's election commitment to increase black spot funding by 33 per cent next year, up to a record $60 million.
"Investing in better roads helps save lives and prevents injury. Safer roads mean greater safety for local motorists, their passengers, as well as cyclists and pedestrians," she said.
Anyone can suggest a location or a section of road for black spot funding using a nomination form that can be downloaded from www.auslink.gov.au.
