Jobs and Skills Expo Keeps Outer Western Sydney Working

More than 450 jobs and apprenticeships will be up for grabs today at the Penrith Jobs and Skills Expo.

The expo will be held at the Panthers Exhibition Marquee between 10 am and 3 pm, giving locals the chance to meet potential employers, training organisations and industry representatives.

Minister for Employment Participation Kate Ellis said the expo provides opportunities for both job seekers and local employers.

"This is a great chance for local job seekers and businesses to come together and discuss local job opportunities," Ms Ellis said.

"With more than 100 exhibitors at the Penrith Expo, I encourage all job seekers to come armed with their resume and take advantage of the unique opportunity to meet a number of employers in one location."

"The Expo will have a jobs board showing what positions are available and a skills board where local training organisations will promote training opportunities Outer Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains."

The Australian Government Jobs and Skills Expos are being held across the country to provide employment and skills training opportunities for areas that continue to do it tough.

The Sydney West-Blue Mountains region is one of 20 vulnerable regions across Australia identified as needing additional support to address local labour market issues through a $45.2 million extension of the Government's Priority Employment Areas initiative.

Having a Jobs and Skills Expo hosted in Penrith is an important part of the Government's efforts to keep local residents in work.

"Last time one of these Expos was held in Penrith, back in 2010, more than 9,000 local job seekers were connected with hundreds of jobs and skills training opportunities. And I want to build on that success with this Expo," Ms Ellis said.

"My message to Penrith residents is to take advantage of this great opportunity because it is never too late to up-skill, re-skill or re-engage in the paid workforce."

Since September 2009 the Australian Government has held 45 expos and more than 16,800 Australians have been connected with jobs.
