Jobs and Skills Expo Keeps Southern Sydney Working
More than 600 jobs and apprenticeships will be up for grabs today at the Australian Government Jobs and Skills Expo in Hurstville.
The Expo will be held at the Hurstville Aquatic Centre, Cnr King Georges Rd and Forest Rd, Penshurst between 10 am and 3 pm, giving locals the chance to meet potential employers, training organisations and industry representatives.
Minister Employment Participation Kate Ellis said the Expo provides opportunities for both job seekers and local employers.
"This is a great chance for local job seekers and businesses to come together and discuss local job opportunities," Ms Ellis said.
"The Expo will have a jobs board showing what positions are available and a skills board where local training organisations will promote training opportunities in the region."
Minister for Human Services Senator Kim Carr encouraged job seekers to attend the Expo and take advantage of the opportunities on offer.
"We want people to be able to fully participate in society - finding a job or some training can be a good place to start. That's why we offer real opportunities close to home," Senator Carr said.
"With more than 75 exhibitors at the Hurstville Expo, I encourage all job seekers to come armed with their resume and take advantage of the unique opportunity to meet a number of employers in one location."
The Australian Government Jobs and Skills Expos are being held across the country to provide employment and skills training opportunities for areas that continue to do it tough.
Local Member for Banks, Daryl Melham said having a Jobs and Skills Expo hosted in Hurstville was an important part of the Government's efforts to keep local residents in work.
"A number of Jobs and Skills Expos have been held in the Greater Sydney region and have been a resounding success with more than 2200 local job seekers connected with hundreds of jobs and skills training opportunities," Mr Melham said.

"My message to job seekers in southern Sydney is to take advantage of this great opportunity because it is never too late to up-skill, re-skill or re-engage in the paid workforce."
Since September 2009 the Australian Government has held 48 Expos and more than 18,300 Australians have been connected with jobs.
"We're looking to build on the success by continuing to hold Expos through until 2013 and I can't wait to see the results here in Hurstville," Ms Ellis said.
