PDF printable version of $12.6 million boost for high performance sport (PDF 22 KB).This funding will provide certainty for national sporting organisations and will help to support high performance athletes and coaches as they prepare for important international events in the years to come.
The Government has committed to strong support for Australian sport and has commissioned an expert independent sports panel to investigate long term reform in sports funding.
The Panel has been tasked to investigate how we can strengthen sport and build on past successes to make sure Australian sport stays strong into the future.
As that important work continues, todays announcement will extend high performance funding for twelve months to June 2010 to allow for certainty and forward planning at the highest level.
The funding will provide $8.1 million for national sporting organisations to support and develop the skills of Australian elite athletes.
The investment also includes funding of $4.5 million for Australian Government Sport Training Grants.
The Australian Sports Commission uses these Grants to provide direct funding to targeted elite athletes who are selected on their potential to win future medals for Australia.
These elite athletes will be able to use the funds to help support their extensive training regimes and competition expenses in the lead up to elite competition.
