Today's announcement sends a clear message to the football world that Australia is serious about hosting the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
The Australian Government will work in partnership with the Football Federation Australia (FFA) and state and territory governments in a united approach to building the strongest bid possible for the 2018 event.
The FFA will formally lodge the Australian bid by the end of 2010 with the decision regarding who will host the 2018 FIFA World Cup expected to be made in 2011.
While we recognise that the task ahead presents huge challenges, we are also inspired by the opportunity to promote Australia and take our nation's sporting identity to a new high.
Australia has an exemplary record in hosting international sporting events, having held the Olympic Games twice and Commonwealth/Empire Games four times.
Our sporting infrastructure is also world class with venues such as Melbourne's iconic MCG and Telstra Dome; Sydney's ANZ Stadium and Football Stadium and Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium matching the world's best.
Hosting the FIFA World Cup will bring significant economic benefit to Australia and boost tourism, infrastructure and jobs around the country.
Outcomes from the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany speak for themselves:
- 2 million international visitors
- 85,000 people employed
- More than 3.3 million spectators
- Cumulative television audience of 26 billion, broadcast in 214 countries
The Government is looking forward to working with the FFA to kick off a world class, competitive bid that will maximise Australia's opportunity to host the biggest sporting event on the globe in 2018.
