ONE YEAR OF THE ABBOTT GOVERNMENT: $1 BILLION IN CUTS TO EARLY EDUCATION

SUNDAY, 7 SEPTEMBER 2014

In the lead up to election day, exactly one year ago, the Coalition campaigned on more affordable child care.

The Coalition’s policy stated: Our approach will ease the financial burden placed on child care centres and families, without compromising the standard of care that must be provided.

REAL SOLUTIONS POLICY DOCUMENT

Before the election Tony Abbott wrote to all child care centres across Australia with this commitment:

I am determined to help make child care more accessible and affordable for parents…

TONY ABBOTT – LETTER TO CHILD CARE OPERATORS – 2 AUGUST 2013

But Tony Abbott lied. Since the election he has done the complete opposite of what he promised. In their very first Budget, the Abbott Government broke their promise by cutting $1 billion from early childhood education and care programs.

The only guarantee we have from this government when it comes to child care is no new money – not a single additional dollar.

Tony Abbott is happy to keep backing his unfair paid parental leave scheme that gives $50,000 to millionaires, while axing $450 million from outside school hours care that women need to be able to return to work.

And the cuts proposed to the means-tested Child Care Benefit will hurt 500,000 low and middle income families.

Australians were promised affordable child care, but cutting $1 billion in child care assistance does not help a single family.

Rather than easing the financial burden, all the Coalition have delivered are cuts and more cuts.

Australians can’t afford another year of Abbott’s lies on child care.
