PM IGNORES THE QUESTION OF WHETHER GRANDPARENTS WILL BE WORSE OFF UNDER CHILD CARE CHANGES

Malcolm Turnbull tried to use grandparent child care assistance to divert attention from his cuts to family payments in Question Time today – the only problem is, his child care changes will abolish the Grandparent Child Care Benefit as well.

When asked why he was cutting $2,500 from single parent families earning $60,000 a year Malcolm Turnbull said:

“For the grandparents on an income support payment, Grandparent Child Care Benefit helps with the cost of raising children. Under this benefit, grandparents currently receive up to 100 hours a fortnight of free child care.”

Unfortunately, this conveniently ignores the fact that his own Budget papers show these supports won’t continue and the Government has refused to say how many grandparents will lose out under their child care changes:

[DSS Portfolio Budget Statement 2015-16, p86]

Labor has been asking for months how many families will be worse off under the Government’s changes – including whether grandparent carers will continue to receive the same level of support under the new system. The Government simply won’t say.

Malcolm Turnbull needs to stop focusing on double-Dutch and start focusing on the clarity families need.
