SA Liberals fighting to give SA children the worst child care standards in Australia

Federal Shadow Minister for Early Childhood, Kate Ellis, has called on the South Australian Liberals to end their campaign to leave South Australian children behind the rest of the nation, with the lowest levels of staff and least amount of supervision of children in child care anywhere across the country.

South Australia currently has Australia's worst staff to child ratio for 2-3 year olds, with just one staff member required for every 10 children. From 2016, this is scheduled to come into line with the rest of the nation, with one staff member for every five children.

"In most states and territories, better ratios have been in place for years - we can't afford to see South Australian children continue to be left behind."

“Research clearly shows that improved staff to child ratios have a big impact on educational outcomes, especially in the early years and ensure that children get the appropriate attention and supervision that they deserve."

"South Australian children don't deserve to have the worst levels of care of any children across the country."

"I understand why some child care providers would be trying to resist change, what I don't understand is why David Pisoni and the SA Liberals would prioritise scaring parents or protecting profits above the clear best interests of our children."

"There is irrefutable evidence that better ratios mean better outcomes - David Pisoni's interstate Liberal colleagues have accepted this, it's time he accepted the evidence too."

"If the South Australian Liberals are concerned about the cost of childcare for parents, perhaps they could join us in speaking out against the $1 billion in cuts to child care assistance that the Abbott Government have already announced.

“The figures produced by David Pisoni cannot be substantiated, and he should stop scaring parents for political reasons.”
