TASMANIAN LIBERAL MPS FAIL TO STAND UP AGAINST CHILD CARE CUTS

WEDNESDAY, 6 AUGUST 2014

Liberal MPs are continuing to deceive Tasmanian families about the Abbott Government’s cuts, with Member for Bass Andrew Nikolic denying in today’s Mercury that the Government plans to cut the Child Care Benefit.

This is simply a lie - the Abbott Government currently has legislation before the Parliament which has the sole purpose of cutting $230 million out of Child Care Benefit.

This is an unprecedented attack – no previous Government has ever moved to cut or freeze the Child Care Benefit.

“Andrew Nikolic should tell his local community if he plans to cross the floor and vote against this legislation, but of course he will instead quietly sit back and let his Government cut this important child care support that 2,590 families in his electorate rely on,” Kate Ellis said.

“If Andrew Nikolic is going to support his Government's unprecedented attack on the Child Care Benefit which the Government's own department has stated will leave 500,000 Australians families worse off, he should at least have the courage to be honest about it.

“Tasmanians are sick of these lies. They expect their representatives to stand up for their communities, not waive through cuts to schools, hospitals and child care support they rely on.”

The legislation is scheduled for debate in the House of Representatives in the next sitting period.

“Andrew Nikolic can either vote in favour of these child care cuts or stand up for his community and vote against them, but he can’t do both,” Kate Ellis said.
