In an attempt to defend program changes on the ABC, Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull yesterday let slip that the closure of the Adelaide production facility and loss of some jobs were directly caused by the Abbott Government’s Budget cuts.
“…the evidence is very clear, you can blame the government’s savings measure if you like for the closure of the production facility in Adelaide or losing jobs in back office changes...”

This admission comes after days of various Government members, including South Australia’s Christopher Pyne, blaming the ABC for not being able to cope with the Budget cuts – cuts that were explicitly promised would not happen by Tony Abbott on the eve of the election.
“While it is refreshing to see the Government finally be honest and admit both that they lied and that their lie has directly caused significant damage in South Australia, it is little consolation to those left packing up their offices just before Christmas,” Federal Member for Adelaide, Kate Ellis, said.
“This continues to be a very hard time for hundreds of workers and their families who now face unemployment and my thoughts are with them.”
“Labor has pledged to keep on fighting for a reversal of these cuts, and we call on Coalition members, particularly those in areas facing closures and job losses, to lobby Tony Abbott to keep his promise, for the sake of the communities they were elected to represent.”
“South Australia and regional Australia have been particular victims of Abbott’s Budget cuts - it is vital our local voice is not lost over the loud buzz of the eastern states – and for this reason, these cuts must be immediately reversed.”
