Labor is repeating its call on the Abbott Government not to punish the family day care sector with measures which will hurt genuine providers and put strain on the childcare industry.
Time is ticking down until the ill-conceived measures, released with no industry consultation, come into effect. The Abbott Government needs to intervene to fix this problem before it is too late, and family day educators are left mopping up the mess.
For many family day carers who have day care needs for their own children, these changes will place them in a situation where they may be forced to walk away from the sector all together, reducing places and putting pressure on other care options.
“I’ve already been contacted by many families and providers who are worried about waiting lists and affordability in the child care sector as a result of these changes,” Shadow Early Childhood Minister Kate Ellis said today.
“The family day care sector is facing a tough future under the Abbott Government – while Labor supports targeted action against those doing the wrong thing, these changes merely punish hard working educators and their families."
