Joe Hockey’s insistence that the states find alternate ways to raise revenue conveniently ignores the fact that the Government's $30 billion cuts to schools created the black hole in the first place.
Shadow Minister for Education, Kate Ellis, said the savage cuts were hurting the states and territories and hurting our children's future.
"These cuts will have an impact on every child, in every classroom, in every school in Australia," she said.
"Joe Hockey is desperately trying to bandaid the bad situation his Government has created ahead of the leader's retreat, but the solution is simple - he needs to drop his savage attack on our schools.
"Joe Hockey’s calls to raise the GST, combined with the impact of the $30 billion cuts and the radical proposals in the Green Paper, shows that one way or another this Government is planning on abandoning our schools entirely.
"Under Tony Abbott, we are facing terrifying times for the future of our education system.
“In contrast, Labor remains committed to the sector-blind, needs-based Gonski principles and we know that now, more than ever, the Federal Government has an important role to play in our schools as they are the key to our economic future.”
