In Senate Estimates today, the Education Minister resorted to using technicalities to hide the Government’s secret plan to execute their $30 billion school cuts.
When asked to provide documents about the Government’s plans for school funding, the Education Minister refused:
Sam Dastyari, Labor Senator: The Minister has to specifically say that he is making a claim of public interest immunity –
Simon Birmingham, Education Minister: I make such a claim Senator Dastyari.
[Senate Estimates, 10 February 2016]
This comes only a day after both the Education and Finance ministers independently confirmed that Malcolm Turnbull’s decision to dump the Gonski reforms and cut $30 billion from our schools was locked into the Budget.
This Government has an appalling track record on schools. Parents and teachers have every right to be worried about whatever they are trying to hide.
If the Government was actually putting the ‘public interest’ first, they would provide certainty for schools.
After nothing but broken promises, our schools don’t need another nasty surprise from the Turnbull Liberal Government.
THE HON KATE ELLIS MP
SHADOW MINISTER FOR EDUCATION
