Malcolm Turnbull has adopted another one of Labor’s vocational education policies, finally agreeing that an ombudsman is needed to help clean up VET FEE-HELP.

This comes almost a year after Labor moved in the Senate to establish an ombudsman for this very same purpose.

It also comes just a week after the government back flipped and embraced Labor’s proposals to cap VET loans and crack down on brokers and dodgy providers.

“We’re flattered the Government keeps copying Labor policies and glad they have finally started to do something to help students,” Kate Ellis, Shadow Minister for TAFE and Vocational Education, said.

“The Government must make sure the ombudsman has the resources and powers it needs to help those students who have been ripped off.

“When Labor announced our vocational education policies, the Government rushed to criticise us – now they are adopting them one by one.

“If only the Government had followed Labor’s lead sooner, instead of changing minister five times in the last three years.”
