Reports today that school funding is going backwards in the Northern Territory show the consequences of the Abbott-Turnbull Government tearing up Labor’s Gonski reforms.
Under the Gonski reforms, states and territories were required to increase their school funding every year in return for extra federal funding targeted at student need.
“Instead of enforcing the rules, the Abbott-Turnbull Government has let Adam Giles off the hook and turned a blind eye while millions are ripped out of Territory schools,” Shadow Education Minister, Kate Ellis, said.
“The lack of accountability in school funding under the Abbott-Turnbull Government is a serious concern.
“States and territories should not be able to divert school funding to other sources.
“The Abbott-Turnbull government has completely dropped the ball on school reform, and Territory students are the ones paying the price.”
This comes as Malcolm Turnbull confirmed he is still committed to $30 billion schools cuts in Question Time today.
