As voters entered polling booths on Election Day, exactly one year ago today, they were confronted with posters that read –
“Liberals will match Labor’s school funding dollar for dollar.”
The Australian public believed when they headed to the polls that they could vote Liberal or Labor and get the same amount of funding for their school.
For the month leading up to the election the Coalition continuously repeated this promise, leaving no doubt in people’s minds of their stance:
“You can vote Liberal or Labor and you’ll get exactly the same amount of funding for your school.”
CHRISTOPHER PYNE – PRESS CONFERENCE – 29 AUGUST 2013
Our policy starts with a clear commitment to all Australian schools: your funding is certain. The Coalition will match Labor dollar-for-dollar.
LIBERAL PARTY MEDIA RELEASE – 29 AUGUST 2013
Just two days before Election Day Tony Abbott pledged -
“No cuts to education, no cuts to health, no change to pensions, no change to the GST and no cuts to the ABC or SBS .”
TONY ABBOTT – SBS INTERVIEW – 5 SEPTEMBER 2013
Since the election they have abandoned the Gonski school funding model, failed to fund years five and six of the Gonski reforms, and cut $30 billion from schools - the biggest ever cut to our schools in Australia’s history.
Tony Abbott has absolutely broken his promises when it comes to education and students will suffer from these lies.
The extent to which the Coalition campaigned on this promise makes the betrayal all the more difficult to bear.
Tony Abbott deliberately set out to deceive voters to grab votes, and never had any intention of delivering on his word.
Teachers, students, parents all have been utterly dismayed at the devastation caused to our schools sector in just one short year of this Government.
The wreckage delivered to our schools is worse than anyone ever expected after such a hard campaign telling Australians the exact opposite.
