Today Malcolm Turnbull demonstrated that a change of face means nothing if the words are the same, after he shirked on a clear opportunity to drop his Government’s $30 billion school cuts.
The Liberals not only walked away from years five and six of Labor’s Gonski reforms, they have linked school funding indexation to the consumer price index from 2018 which will result in the biggest cut to school funding in Australia’s history.
This was a clear broken promise from Tony Abbott, and today we learnt that Malcolm Turnbull will do nothing to fix this.
Question Time presented a clear opportunity demonstrate that something had changed - to respond to the concerns of the experts and the community, but instead all we had from Malcolm Turnbull was a confirmation that:
“The Government’s policies haven’t changed.” [MALCOLM TURNBULL, QUESTION TIME, 19 OCTOBER 2015]
He also confirmed what the Budget papers have shown for some time – that no amount of Liberal rhetoric can hide the fact the reality that the Government is cutting school funding:
“If the Opposition wants to be credible on this issue, what it should be doing is presenting its plans to pay for the cuts that they do not approve of.” [MALCOLM TURNBULL, QUESTION TIME, 19 OCTOBER 2015]
Today Malcolm Turnbull confirmed he is committed to the same bad policy, creating an uncertain future for our schools.
